Average skyscraper height in la12/24/2023 ![]() ![]() So even if the city is not dense one could see it as people trying to recreate what they can of the effect.ĭisclaimer: I don't know if my thoughts are accurate, but to my mind they do explain a lot in terms of the social and political mindsets that drive a lot of development related decisions. (The same effect that makes cities work well when people are clustered together). That’s not even mentioning the cluster effect which others have mentioned, there are positive economic effects when workers are clustered together. It is auto oriented density which results in the crushing traffic the area is famous for but density all the same, and dense auto oriented cities tend to develop a skyline or polycentric clusters. It is actually the densest urban area in the United States. On the other hand, as u/Andrew_Korenchkin mentioned, LA is not low density as most people believe. Freeway oriented cities do tend to have polycentric clusters of dense development but it is not usually as tall as these (West Hollywood in LA, the Medical Center in Houston). One definitely has to consider this as part of the answer considering the companies that generally opt for skyscraper office space (banks, insurance companies, law firms, oil companies, nowadays sometimes tech companies). Several LA skyscrapers are or were marketed as “the tallest buildings west of the Mississippi”. On the side of the vanity project idea, the Houston skyline also has a cluster of 700+ ft skyscrapers that were mostly built during oil booms. ![]()
